Jean- François CHAMPOLLION, the decipherer
Figeac is the town where J F Champollion was born, on December 23rd, 1790. His house is today, a museum: The Champollion Museum.
In 1801, at the age of ten, he was sent off to study at the Lyceum in Grenoble (450 km from Figeac). He lived at Vif, near Grenoble, where his second house is a Museum too: "The Champollion's House":
